AUDITION NOTICE: “Just East of Broadway”

GIG Productions (producers/writers of The Lord of the Rings: The Musical: The Musical! – Best of the Fringe, Patron’s Pick at the 2007 Fringe Festival), is looking for actors (strong singers/dancers, good comedic abilities) to perform in an original musical at the 2009 Toronto Fringe Festival.

This musical tells the story of Rex Maverick, a has-been movie star in a Hollywood marriage-of-convenience. When Rex’s tabloid embarrassments become too much for his wife to bear, she convinces him to restart his career by starring in a production in China, theatre’s greatest “emerging market.” But instead of Beijing or Shanghai, Rex arrives in a tiny farming community directing a cast of amateurs, including an enthusiastic foreign English teacher, a bumbling Mid-Level Official, and a strong-willed young woman contemptuous of the Hollywood star. While Rex is stuck in the town waiting for seasonal rains to pass, cultures clash, personalities collide, and musical magic is born.

The result is an unsettling montage that gradually reveals the scabrous force of words left unsaid while illuminating the delicate interplay between intention and morality.” (Faber and Faber)
